In my opinion this is perhaps the first great masterpiece by Handel. I prefer it over his most famous operas Serses and Julias Caesar. I have also thought of Saul as being one of Handel's three greatest oratorios along with Messiah and Israel in Egypt, although there will likely be differing opinions.
